Pre-K to Grade 3 Alignment Strategy Sessions
Many communities have been making progress in Pre-K to Grade 3 alignment work. However, the lack of  funding and knowledge about how to create the culture of alignment make it challenging for communities to make this a priority. Join the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) at one of two upcoming Pre-K to Grade 3 Alignment Strategy Sessions to address both of these challenges.  Communities are encouraged to bring a team that includes Superintendents, Elementary Principals, Pre-K to Grade 3 teachers, Curriculum Directors, Community Education Directors, as well as representatives of Child Care and Community Preschools.
"The goal of the Pre-K to Grade 3 Initiative is to bridge the communication gap so that our pre-k work is truly a foundation that can be successfully built upon in the early elementary years," said Teri Steckelberg, SMIF's Early Childhood Director.
Meet the Presenter: Dr. Adam Holland
Adam Holland, Ph.D., is currently an Investigator on the FirstSchool Pre-K to 3 Initiative at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute located at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has taught first grade, pre-kindergarten, and three year-olds with special needs but spent most of his teaching career in kindergarten. Dr. Holland's chief interest is in children's motivation and engagement. He has presented on these topics across the United States and internationally to a variety of audiences ranging from teachers and administrators to other researchers and professors.  In his spare time, Dr. Holland enjoys sleeping and reading all things.  (I took out “the” because I think he has a typo here – what do you think?)
This session will focus on building classroom and school community through the lens of student motivation and engagement literatures. We will begin with a discussion on common mistakes made in this area, particularly with regard to classroom management. Then, we will examine practices and policies which support community building. We will end the day by talking about how to include parents in the school community, as well as how seamless transitions between grade levels can improve student engagement. Time will be included throughout the day to allow for discussion and action planning around the topics.
